Judy Brooks, a long-time member of the Amherst community and a committed activist for human rights, social justice, and intrinsic dignity, died last week at the age of 74. Judy and her husband Barry initially moved to Amherst in 1971 to co-direct the ABC House. She subsequently taught at Pelham Elementary for over thirty years. Among many other contributions to the community, Judy served on the town's Select Board, the Housing Authority, and as an active member of the League of Women Voters.
On October 21, Jerry Gates received the Jean Haggerty Award at the Amherst Media annual meeting. The award was presented by Matt Heron-Duranti and preceded by a statement from last year's recipient Judy Brooks.
