[Amherst, MA] The Downtown Amherst Foundation’s Grant Review Committee has selected the successful applicants from the first grant-giving cycle with businesses representative of several sectors including restaurants/cafés, bars and pubs, retail establishments and services. Amherst Media in our attempt to build a new facility on our Main and Gray Street property has spent many months and thousands of dollars working closely with the Local Historic District Commission (LHDC) to produce a building that maximized design compatibility and minimized the location's impact on the surrounding neighborhood.  It was our hope those efforts would please the neighboring landowners, who instead filed an appeal to the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission, leaving us wondering what was the point of all that work by us and the members of the Commission.
Frederick Tillis

Dr. Frederick C. Tillis passed away at the age of 90 on Sunday. Tillis led the Fine Arts Center at the University of Massachusetts as director emeritus. He was a musician, poet, composer and advocate for the arts, and started successful art initiatives at UMass Amherst such as Jazz in July and the Jazz and Afro-American Music Studies Program.

Amherst Media’s dedicated and talented staff, Faith Gregory and Jeff Mastroianni deserve special thanks and recognition for how they have responded to the current Covid-19 emergency, by providing essential services to the Amherst community. Between March 20 and April 30, 2020, there has been 30 work days. During that period, they have posted and scheduled for cablecasting 23 government shows, 16 of which were broadcast live. The other 7, Town of Amherst Community Chats, were recorded Zoom meetings given to us for cablecasting, often up on cable and YouTube on the same day.

Pioneer Valley Planning Commission’s historic preservation planner Shannon Walsh has rejected Harmsway LLC’s appeal to reverse the Emily Dickinson Local Historic District’s decision to award Amherst Media a certificate of appropriateness.  The detailed report refuted each of the abutters objections and supported the exhaustive efforts of the applicant to meet the recommendations of the Local Historic District Commission.
