Amherst Media’s NEWS@AmherstMedia is proud to bring to you a new series, “Western Mass Calling.”  Series host Jim Lescault, along with regional institutional leaders, will explore the current socio-economic conditions facing Western Massachusetts’ residents and businesses.  This 30 minute talk show will engage in conversations covering such topics as politics, economics, education, religion, social services, and housing.

The third annual Samuel Minot Jones Awards for Literary Achievement, colloquilly known as "The Sammys", will be presented Thursday, April 28 at Amherst College.  The recipients this year are author Polly Longsworth and Yiddish Book Center founder Aaron Lansky.

Joe Ameur

Amherst Media is pleased to announce the hiring of Joe Ameur as our Director of Programming. Joe Ameur graduated from UMass Amherst in 2015, majoring in Communication and English with a focus on filmmaking and screenwriting. During his studies at UMass, Joe interned at Amherst Media as a Production Assistant and worked on many field and studio productions, as well as our archiving project. He follows in the steps of impressive former interns joining our staff, including the preceding Director of Programming, Kayla Creamer.

Frances Perkins

This new film is currently in the support and production stage for a new APT/PBS film on the life and legacy of Labor Secretary Frances Perkins titled Frances Perkins: Fire and Ice.   Perkins was the first woman appointed to the U.S. Cabinet and served the longest term as Secretary of Labor from 1933 to 1945.  She helped push the labor movement into the New Deal coalition.  It is important to never forget the origins of the American Social Safety Net and the woman who was accountable for it.

The College of Social and Behavioral Science has announced the spring lineup for the Social Science Matters speakers series, entitled "Perspective on Resistance". Speakers for each event were selected by the departments within the College and highlight the cross-disciplinary connections and contributions of the social sciences disciplines.

Celebrate the Amherst Survival Center's 40th anniversary by participating in the Empty Bowls fundraiser. The event takes place March 21st from 4-8pm at The Pub in Amherst. Tickets are on sale now at A.J. Hastings and The Pub. Admission includes a handmade bowl, soup, salad, and bread and a raffle will be held to win a Josh Simpson glass bowl. Help fight hunger in our community as all proceeds will support programs held by the Amherst Survival Center.
