Amherst Media co-sponsored and filmed a candidates forum featuring the Democratic candidates running for the Third Hampshire District seat, Eric Nakajima and Mindy Domb. The forum was held at the Bangs Community Center on Wednesday, July 18th. The primary election will be on September 4th and the winner of this race will face independent incumbent Solomon-Goldstein Rose in November's general election. The forum was sponsored by the Daily Hampshire Gazette, Amherst Media, WHMP, and the Amherst League of Women Voters.

Judy Brooks, a long-time member of the Amherst community and a committed activist for human rights, social justice, and intrinsic dignity, died last week at the age of 74. Judy and her husband Barry initially moved to Amherst in 1971 to co-direct the ABC House. She subsequently taught at Pelham Elementary for over thirty years. Among many other contributions to the community, Judy served on the town's Select Board, the Housing Authority, and as an active member of the League of Women Voters.

The Amherst Media community is shocked and saddened to learn of Bruce Smith's passing. He was a prominent character on channel 12 and a familiar presence around the station. Bruce was a lifelong resident of Amherst. He produced over 100 episodes of "The Bruce Show" and filmed community and high school basketball games. Many members of the public simply knew of him as "the man on the couch." He was an iconic figure in our programming.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate voted largly along party lines to support net neutrality, the idea that broadband service providers treat internet data the same regardless of content, source, or destination much like the phone companies are required to do. Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey spearheaded the efforts to force the vote. Senator Markey has been a strong proponent of net neutrality as noted in this recent statement to Amherst voters filmed by Amherst Media.
