North Pleasant Street will be dedicated to pedestrian traffic this Thursday from 5-9pm as the Amherst Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) hosts the annual Celebrate Amherst Block Party. The Block party will feature three stages of music, food and craft vendors, booth from local businesses and non-profits, jugglers, yo-yo masters, games, a dunk booth and much more!

Lisa Aronson Fontes, PhD an author and Senior Lecturer at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst has a new book titled Invisible Chains: Overcoming Coercive Control in Your Intimate Relationship. Throughout the course of the book Dr. Fontes covers the many stages and forms of coercive control as well as tips on how to recognize that you or someone you know may be in a controlling relationship and how to get out.

Amherst Media is proud to have produced a fundraising campaign video for Urban Light, an organization that empowers boys who are victims of human trafficking and exploitation in Thailand. One of our former interns, Fiona Servaes, who has been working with Urban Lights, came in to ask for our assistance in helping to launch the on-line fundraiser. Fiona worked with Ari Hayes, our Director of Production to create the video appeal

As we move into the fall, we have officially completed a full year of our archiving project. During the past year, we’ve had a number of interns helping us capture tapes and have captured almost 1500 tapes to date! This is roughly half of the tapes we have in the archive room. As we fill up hard drives with the digitized files, we are making them available via Archive.org on a special Amherst Media Archives account.

On Friday, August 14, 2015, a community-wide survey will be available electronically and in paper form in order to collect information from our citizens and families about the possibility of consolidating the Regional Middle and High Schools into a single building. The exploration of this possible consolidation is the result of a significant funding gap, as well as a declining student population.

Chicago (July 13, 2015) – More than a dozen leading, U.S.-based companies today announced the formation of the 100,000 Opportunities Initiative, which has the goal of being the nation’s largest employer-led coalition committed to creating pathways to meaningful employment for America’s young people. The coalition has the collective goal of engaging at least 100,000 Opportunity Youth – 16-24 year olds who face systemic barriers to jobs and education – by 2018 through apprenticeships, internships, training programs, and both part-time and full-time jobs.

Makers @ Amherst Media (M@AM) was invited to help kick off the "National Week of Making" on June 12th and 13th at the National Makerfaire in Washington, D.C., Christine Olson, a doctoral student of communication at UMass, Liz Pongratz, an alumna of UMass' class of 2015, and Jim Lescault, director of Amherst Media, spent Friday and Saturday at the Makerfaire discussing the evolution of M@AM with visitors from throughout the country.

The Curious Giraffe Show is a brand new program at Amherst Media, created and hosted by Dorothy Cresswell. In each episode, children of all ages gather with Dorothy to tackle an interesting topic that "kids wonder about." These themes can range from social issues to educational topics. Through song and storytelling, Dorothy teaches valuable lessons and addresses the children's questions in a friendly and fun-loving environment. Guest speakers are also invited onto the show to help create a discussion where all questions are welcome.

'A Quiet Passion' is set to be the first feature length film surrounding the life and work of the world famous poet Emily Dickinson. Film makers will be shooting at the Dickinson Homestead, the Wildwood Cemetery, and historical locations is Pelham the week of June 15th. The excitement is felt throughout the area and especially at the Emily Dickinson Museum in Amherst.

Christine Olson represented Makers at Amherst Media at Hack for Western Mass on June 6 and 7. This annual event, a celebration of the National Day of Civic Hacking, brings technologists together with community partners to solve local problems. During the hackathon, people organize into teams and build websites, apps, and other technology projects to support local non-profits. In addition, the hackathon includes a "Youth Hackathon" with demos in Scratch, Minecraft, and our Makerspace.
