Record date: May 10, 2019
On this week's segment of "Byline with Stan Rosenberg," at 8 p.m. on Channel 17, Rosenberg will be joined by Amherst Regional Public Schools Superintendent Michael Morris to discuss the fiscal 2020 school budgets.
A $24 million budget recently adopted for the Amherst elementary schools includes a 2.6 percent increase over fiscal 2019, according to Morris, while the regional middle and high schools budget totaled about $32 million, a 1.10% increase. The regional budget was approved last month by the Amherst Town Council and by the Pelham, Leverett and Shutesbury Town Meetings.
New staff positions in the schools led to some budget increases, Morris said, to support restorative justice practices, alignment of curriculum for the middle and high schools, and launch of the dual language program at Fort River Elementary School this fall. Morris also noted that the district's previously declining enrollment appears to have reached a plateau.
