Remembrances of Judy Brooks

Judy Brooks, a long-time member of the Amherst community and a committed activist for human rights, social justice, and intrinsic dignity, died last week at the age of 74. Judy and her husband Barry initially moved to Amherst in 1971 to co-direct the ABC House. She subsequently taught at Pelham Elementary for over thirty years. Among many other contributions to the community, Judy served on the town's Select Board, the Housing Authority, and as an active member of the League of Women Voters.

Amherst Media is honored to have presented Judy with the Jean Haggerty Award in 2014, which was established to honor Jean’s lifetime dedication to community betterment and advocacy towards free speech for those without a voice and those who follow that path. Judy Brooks also made appearances on our channels as a host of election coverage and as a guest on shows such as Going Deeper with Marcie Schlove whose two-part interview allowed for in-depth discussion. Watch the award presentation and Going Deeper episodes below.

For the Daily Hampshire Gazette, Scott Merzbach has gathered recollections and insights about Judy Brooks from her friends and community members.
