On October 21, Jerry Gates received the Jean Haggerty Award at the Amherst Media annual meeting. The award was presented by Matt Heron-Duranti and preceded by a statement from last year's recipient Judy Brooks.
Now in its sixth year, the Jean Haggerty Award is presented in honor of Jean’s lifetime dedication to community betterment and advocacy towards free speech for those without a voice. Past recipients have been Judy Brooks, Isaac BenEzra, Cynthia Brubaker, Ed Severance and the four founders of Student News: Joshua Wolfsun, Jessie Chasan-Taber, Charles Brewer & Graham Churchill.
Jerry Gates has been instrumental in the establishment of Craig’s Place, a homeless emergency shelter that he continues to serve as President of their Board of Directors. The shelter partners with Town government, local churches, and social-service agencies to provide a safe place, nutritious meals, warm showers, and supportive community during the winter months. Jerry has also supported the Amherst Community Connection’s Transitional Housing Program and aided in the creation of the Shelter-to-Work program.
The video of the ceremony is being broadcast on cable and is available any time online.
